Sweet Pepperbush — Sweet Pepperbush, Clethra alnifolia ‘Ruby Spice,’ displays its bright yellow autumn leaves which contrast nicely to the Aromatic Asters, Symphyotrichum oblongifolium ‘Raydon’s Favorite’ in the distance behind them.

Blueberry Bush leaves turning red in October — Highbush Blueberry, Vaccinium corymbosum, leaves are turning a fiery red in October. White Pine, Pinus Strobus, is in the background.

Guara, Oenothera lindheimeri ‘Siskiyou Pink’ started flowering in late September but is putting on quite the pink display in October.

Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardii, among seed heads of NY Ironweed, Vernonia noveboracensis. — Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardi ‘Black Hawks’ deep purple, flowering stems rise above seed heads of NY Ironweed, Vernonia noveborecensis.

Viburnam nudum 'Brandywine' — Smooth Witherod, Viburnam nudum ‘Brandywine’ shows its fall berries as its leaves turn from green to brilliant red.

Winterberry — Winterberry, Ilex verticillata, variety, ‘Winter Gold’ with coral-colored berries.

Aniese hyssop flowers — Anise Hyssop, Agastache foeniculum, still has striking blue/purple flowers after starting to bloom in June. The leaves of the Beardtongue, Penstemon digitalis, have turned red for fall giving a colorful backdrop to Anise Hyssop’s last blue blooms.

Wrinkleleaf Goldenrod, Solidago rugosa shines brightly in the sun. Bees at this time of year buzz happily around these late blooms of the year.

Andropogon gerardi 'Black Hawks' — Big Bluestem, Andropogon gerardi ‘Black Hawks’ purple and bluish-green colors against a background of green provided by Beardtongue, Penstemon digitalis whose bottom leaves have yet to turn bright red.

Fragrant Sumac — Fragrant Sumac, Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-Low’ puts on a colorful fall display. It’s planted next to my driveway for it’s beauty and its toughness.

Mountain Mint Peeks Through Aromatic Aster — Mountain Mint, Pycnanthemum muticum,peeks out among the purple blooms of Aromatic Aster, Symphyotrichum oblongifolium ‘Raydon’s Favorite’.
